Nyack Tree Project

Overview

Since its inception in March 2016, the Nyack Tree Project has become a well established program with support from the Village of Nyack, local volunteers and staff and corporate partners. Each spring and fall volunteers plant 25-30 trees along village streets and in the parks.

Trees are chosen according to the site conditions and in most cases purchased from Schichtel’s Nursery in Springville, NY, which has a large inventory of bare root trees. Since bare root trees have no heavy soil ball around the roots, they are easy for volunteers to handle. Local landscaper Jack Bozat digs the planting holes with a small machine before the volunteers arrive to plant. The Nyack DPW waters the trees during the establishment period.

As the young trees develop, Tree Project volunteers selectively prune the trees to train the branches as needed and monitor the trunks and planting areas. They encourage property owners to help by weeding, mulching and watering.

Individual Donations and Volunteering

Get Involved:   Fall is the time for local volunteers to plant. The planting day, usually the first week in November, is a fun way to spend a few hours. Tree stewardship sessions are organized from time to time throughout the year.

Corporate Support

Local businesses have provided support for plantings. Luxury Kitchen and Bath in Nyack regulated contributed to the Tree Project Fund for each kitchen sold. Wickes/Arborists Tree Service partnered with the Mike Naclerio Landscaping for the spring planting in 2021.

In 2022, the Orangeburg manufacturer Nice-Pak and American Forests supported the Tree Project with generous funding and full cohort of volunteers. With $25,000 for tree planting in and near the downtown areas, planting locations were created by removing paving and decompacting soil before the planting of thirty trees plus perennials and grasses.

In the spring of 2023 and 2024, Subaru Distributors Corporation funded and provided volunteers for the plantings and have made a commitment to the project for future spring plantings.
