Hydrant Flushing

Hydrant Flushing Program

Each year, the Nyack Water Department conducts hydrant flushing throughout the Village and neighboring service areas. This important program helps maintain the integrity of our water system.

Purpose of Hydrant Flushing

Hydrant flushing serves several key functions:

  • Enhances Water Quality: Removes sediments from mainline pipes.
  • Ensures Proper Operation: Verifies the functionality of fire hydrants and valves.
  • Identifies System Weaknesses: Helps locate closed valves and weak flow areas in the water mains.
  • Supports Fire Safety: Confirms sufficient flow for firefighting efforts.

What to Expect During Hydrant Flushing

  • Temporary Drop in Water Pressure: You may notice a decrease in water pressure during flushing.
  • Discolored Water: Water may appear rusty or cloudy. This is not harmful and should clear up within a few hours.
    • Tip: Fill a bottle with water and store it in the refrigerator for drinking or cooking.
    • Flush Hot Water Tanks: After the cold water runs clear, flush your hot water tanks to remove any sediment.

Important Reminders:

  • Avoid Washing Whites: Wait until both cold and hot water are clear before doing laundry.
  • Minimize Water Use: If you see a crew flushing a hydrant on your street, avoid running tap water or using washing machines and dishwashers until flushing is complete.
  • Drive Safely: Treat the crew like any other road construction team and drive carefully in the area.

What to Do After Hydrant Flushing

If you encounter discolored water after flushing:

  1. Shut Off the Tap: Wait a few minutes, then check the water clarity by running cold water for a few minutes.
  2. Assess the Water: If the water is clear, it’s safe to use. If it remains discolored, wait a bit longer and check again.
  3. Laundry Precautions: Avoid washing clothes during this time. Once the water runs clear, wash a load of dark clothes first, as hot water tanks may still contain discolored water.

If You Experience Low Pressure:

  • Check faucet screens for trapped particles, which can affect water flow.

By participating in our hydrant flushing program, you help us ensure high-quality water service for our community. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
