Information about Lead in Water

Lead in Drinking Water: What You Need to Know

Lead is a toxic metal that can cause serious health problems, particularly in young children and pregnant women. It can enter drinking water primarily through the corrosion of lead-containing plumbing fixtures, pipes, and solder used in older homes and buildings. Understanding the risks associated with lead in drinking water is essential for safeguarding your health and that of your family.

How Does Lead Get into Water?

Lead may leach into drinking water from:

  • Lead Pipes: Older plumbing systems, especially those installed before 1986, may contain lead pipes.
  • Solder: Lead-based solder used to join pipes can also contribute to lead contamination.
  • Fixtures: Some faucets and fixtures may contain lead, especially if they are not certified lead-free.

Health Effects of Lead Exposure

Exposure to lead can lead to a variety of health issues, including:

  • Developmental delays and learning difficulties in children.
  • Behavioral problems and decreased IQ.
  • Adverse effects on the kidneys and nervous system in adults.

What You Can Do to Protect Your Family

  • Get Your Water Tested: If you suspect lead in your water, consider having it tested by a certified laboratory.
  • Use Cold Water for Cooking and Drinking: Always use cold water for cooking and drinking, as hot water can leach lead more quickly.
  • Flush Your Tap Water: If water has been sitting in your pipes for several hours, let it run for a minute or two before using it for drinking or cooking.
  • Install a Water Filter: Use a certified water filter that is capable of removing lead from drinking water.

Important Notice: Lead Service Line Inspection

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) require the Village of Nyack to identify any lead service lines and develop a plan for their replacement.

To comply with these regulations, the Village Water Department needs to conduct a visual inspection of the water line entering your home or business. This inspection is essential and must be completed before October 16, 2024. It will take approximately 10 minutes.

Water Department staff will be visiting each property between 7 AM and 7 PM to carry out these inspections. If you require special arrangements to provide access, please contact the Water Department Office at Village Hall at 845-358-0641.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us ensure safe drinking water for all residents.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at 845-358-0641 or nyackwater@nyack-ny.gov.
