Building Department Initiative

We’re excited to share a new initiative from our Building Department aimed at improving safety in the Village. We’ve added two new Assistant Code Inspectors, one of whom started last month, and in just two weeks, has issued almost 80 Inspection Reports to address safety concerns that were previously overlooked.

The goal is not to issue fines but to educate homeowners about code violations and work together on solutions. These reports serve as warnings, giving property owners the chance to remedy issues before formal enforcement begins.

Some of the key violations being addressed include:

  • House Numbers: Ensure they’re visible and at least 4-6 inches high for emergency responders.
  • Corner Bushes: Trimmed to 3 feet to improve visibility and safety.
  • Retaining Wall Railings: Required for walls over 30 inches to prevent falls.
  • Peeling Paint: Addressing lead paint hazards, especially in homes built before 1978.
  • Dead Trees & Sidewalk Issues: Removing hazards that could affect public safety.

If you receive an Inspection Report, please read it carefully, reach out to the Building Department for clarification, and work with us to resolve any issues. We’re committed to making Nyack safer, cleaner, and more beautiful for everyone.
