Mayor's Message:

“There is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it.”

-Amanda Gorman

Five thoughts for the week:

1. Black History Month Celebration on Saturday.

This week, you’ll have a wonderful opportunity to recognize and celebrate February as “Black History Month” at the Nyack Center’s annual celebration, which will feature music, song, and spoken word, featuring the Dr. Martin Luther King Oratory finalists, and will also honor Dr. Jacqueline Cassagnol, Naomi and Terrence Clarke, and. Rev. Carl L. Washington III. The event is free and open to the community on Saturday, February 8th at the Nyack Center, with a cultural bazaar starting at 6:30PM and the program at 7:30PM.

2. The Village Board Honors Fire Chief Miles Taylor

At our Thursday meeting, the Village Board honored the achievements of Fire Chief Miles Taylor, who passed away in late December after a long career serving the residents of the Nyacks. We were delighted to host members of the Taylor family for a short presentation of a Certificate of Achievement in recognition of Chief Taylor. We mourn his loss, and honor the enormous legacy he has left.

3. Congratulating the Decorating Contest Winners

The Board was also delighted to welcome the winners of the Holiday Decorating Contest that we held in December. The business winners were Quilt Tree (Judge’s Choice) and Crystals on the Rocks (Public Choice), and the Residential winners were the Koke & Belfry family of Nyack (Public Choice), and the Patuto family of Upper Nyack (Judge’s Choice). The winners received certificates and prizes, including gift certificates generously donated by Elmwood Playhouse here in Nyack. Congratulations and our thanks for everyone who participated in the contests to beautify Nyack during the holidays.

4. Valentine’s Day

Speaking of holidays, go check out the beautiful lights put up by our Department of Public Works in Hezekiah Easter Veteran’s Square. The square looks great. More importantly, Nyack is a great place to do your shopping for Valentine’s Day, with an array of gift shops and places to buy flowers, chocolate, delicacies and more. Try to shop local for your Valentine’s Day needs, and then make a reservation for your Friday night dinner at one of our great restaurants!

5. The New Nyack.Gov

We are thrilled to formally do the “ribbon-cutting” for our new website at Nyack.gov, which has been completely re-organized and re-designed.
