Mayor's Message:

Hi all,

A couple of things this week:

Welcomes and Farewells

I wanted to welcome our new Village Treasurer Kyle Coimbra, who was formally appointed to the position at last Thursday’s Village Board meeting. Kyle is extraordinary well-qualified for his new role, with an MBA and extensive accounting experience with top firm. Welcome, Kyle!

I would be remiss if I did not thank our long-time Treasurer Jen Hetling, who is retiring after doing a wonderful job with us for years (although she will be available as a consultant to the Village to help with the transition). We are thankful for her service and wish her all the best.

Also, I wanted to congratulate Dudley Lagrenade, who has been working in our Parking Enforcement department but has now been elevated to a full-time role as a Parking Enforcement Aide. Our parking enforcers do a hard job with dignity and grace, and we are grateful for the hard work they do. Welcome, Dudley!

Nyack Events

We had a couple of really terrific events in Nyack this past week that I wanted to highlight. First, the Nyack Fresh Market held an open forum in Village Hall to get input from residents about how they could better serve the community. We had an amazing standing-room-only turnout full of people eager to help the market better succeed in Nyack, and I want to commend the owners of the market for being so open about their situation and their need for more community support.

If you couldn’t attend, the Journal News’ Nancy Cutler did an excellent recap that you can find here, along with a lovely photo gallery of the market.

If you would like to share your thoughts on how Fresh Market could be more successful, they still have an online survey available here. And I also hope you’ll try to remember to do more of your food shopping there, because we all want the market to stay in downtown Nyack.

Second, congrats to everyone who was honored at the Berea Nyack Seventh-Day Adventist Church’s “Crown of Glory Senior Appreciation Gala” on Saturday night at the Seaport, with proceeds benefitting youth development programming. I was privileged to be there, and it was a lovely event honoring Bertis Blanks, Sr., Nancy Cindy Blackwell Corker, Thomasina Glass, April Cobb Perkins, Willie Trotman, and Bessie Walker. Congratulations to all.

Third, Memorial Park hosted the Penguin Plunge, a wonderful event that raises money for seriously ill children to help them meet their medical and support costs. Hundreds of people gathered at the waterfront and raised thousands of dollars by braving the icy water of the Hudson. I was proud to be one of them, along with many of our Nyack friends and neighbors. If you missed the event but would still like to donate, you can do so here.

This Week!

For this coming week, I wanted to highlight a great event for our firefighters. The Ladies Auxiliary Fire Company #1 is having a Corned Beef Dinner on Saturday, March 8 from 5PM to 8PM at the firehouse at 90 Depot Place in South Nyack. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $8 for kids under 10. They’re even doing takeout if you can’t eat there! Please support our local firehouses, and the volunteer firefighters who do so much for our community. More information at 845-358-8286. You don’t need to RSVP, just show up!

Have a great week, everyone!
