Mayor's Message: Hi all,
Hope you all got through the loss of one hour’s sleep this past weekend. We had a busy weekend, and a busy week to come. Some items of note:
I was honored this past weekend to march with a group of civil rights activists across the Shared Use Path on the bridge to honor the 60th anniversary of the “Bloody Sunday” Edmund Pettis Bridge March in Selma Alabama. My thanks to Bill Batson and all the Indivisible Rockland organizers for putting this inspiring event together, as we remembered and honored the heroism of the brave men and women who risked their lives to stand up against racism, and committed to our own efforts to continue their fight in these difficult times. i was so proud on Saturday to help welcome a group of organizers from the Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State, who are part of an effort to create a Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad heritage trail up and down the east coast. Bill Batson (again!) has been instrumental in bringing these organizers to Nyack and Rockland County, to ensure that Nyack is part of the trail’s path. So we had a lovely morning with them, visiting the Cynthia Hestra/Toni Morrison “Bench by the Road" in Memorial Park, the Mount Moor Cemetery in West Nyack, and enjoying a tasty brunch at the Nyack Center provided by the fine folks from My Father’s Kitchen. We were delighted to welcome the organizers, including State Assemblywoman Stefani Zinerman, and to show off Nyack to them. I had the pleasure on Saturday of attending the Corned Beef Dinner put on by the Ladies Auxiliary at the Orangetown Fire Company #1 in South Nyack. The meal was terrific, but more importantly the spirit of all who came out to thank our wonderful volunteer firefighters was inspiring.
This week, I wanted to highlight that the Rockland Pride Chorus will be performing at the Angel Nyack (18 S. Broadway) on Thursday night (doors open 6:30PM, concert at 7PM), in a collaboration with Music for Life Creative Arts Therapy. This should be a wonderful event, and I hope you will be able to attend. Tickets are $10 for a suggested donation. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the full concert because Thursday night is also the next Village Board meeting (at 7:30PM), where we will be discussing some of these items:
Every Village Board meeting also has opportunities for public comment at the beginning and end of the meetings, as well as during consideration of relevant issues, so you are welcome to come have your voice heard on these issues or anything on your mind. You might have seen the Nyack Water Department notice about a recent violation of a drinking water requirement. If not, you can read it here. If you want to find out more about the violation, or ask questions about it, the Water Department Board is having its next meeting on THURSDAY, MARCH 20TH at 4:30PM at Village Hall. If you cannot make the live meeting, it will be simulcast on the Village Youtube channel at www.nyack.link/youtube.
Finally, a heads-up that we will be making an announcement late Tuesday morning on Facebook Live on the Village Facebook page. Keep an eye out for it!
Upcoming Meetings: Nyack Business Council: Thursday, March 13 at 5:30PM, Village Hall. Reminders: Water Main Project Schedule: Fifth Ave Water Main Replacement – Construction Notice The water main on Fifth Ave, from North Midland to North Broadway, will be under construction during the week of March 10, 2025. Unfortunately, Fifth Ave was not originally included in the water main project, but after experiencing multiple breaks, it became clear that replacement was necessary. Fifth Ave was repaved in 2024, and we have received assurances from the contractor that the road surface will be restored to match the quality of the new pavement. Additionally, Francis Ave, Central Ave, First St., Marion St., and Jefferson St. will be repaved once the water main project is completed, followed by sidewalk improvements. This work is expected to take place in 2026. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our infrastructure. |
