MAYORS MESSAGE

Hi all,

The big news last week was really, really big: The Village of Nyack won a $4.5 million NY Forward grant from New York State for downtown revitalization!

This was a highly competitive grant with nearly 40 applicants from just the mid-Hudson Valley region. It is also the largest New York State grant the Village has ever received. As I mentioned in our special announcement last Wednesday, we are deeply grateful to everyone involved in the application effort—especially our Village staff and the volunteer members of our application committee.

Three Key Things to Know About the $4.5M NY Forward Grant:

1. The grant will fund major downtown revitalization initiatives.

Our application identified several key projects we hope to fund, including:

  • A new HVAC system for the Angel of Nyack event space
  • Waterfront redevelopment (including a potential waterfront restaurant)
  • Improved walkability connections between downtown and the waterfront
  • Support for the Fire Department’s workforce housing for volunteer firefighters
  • Various beautification efforts (downtown murals, wayfinding signage, a makeover of the thruway underpass on Route 59)

2. The projects and their allocations are not “set in stone.”

While our application outlined these projects, nothing is final yet. A new committee and the state will review and vet all projects, meaning some allocations may change, some projects may be dropped, and new ones may be added. Think of this grant as a “line of credit” for downtown revitalization—each individual project still needs approval.

3. We are just at the beginning of a long process.

This is a transparent and public process involving:

  • The formation of a local committee
  • Engagement with the Department of State
  • Public input to refine and improve revitalization plans

This process will take at least a year before final allocations are determined. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to be involved and have your voice heard!

Reminders:

Water Main Project Schedule: Fifth Ave Water Main Replacement

The water main on Fifth Ave, from North Midland to North Broadway, will continue to be under construction during the week of March 17, 2025. Unfortunately, Fifth Ave was not originally included in the water main project, but after experiencing multiple breaks, it became clear that replacement was necessary.

Fifth Ave was repaved in 2024, and we have received assurances from the contractor that the road surface will be restored to match the quality of the new pavement.

Additionally, Francis Ave, Central Ave, First St., Marion St., and Jefferson St. will be repaved once the water main project is complete, including a separate project for some sidewalk improvements. This work is expected to take place in 2026.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our infrastructure.
